Arsenal have sounded out Victor Osimhen’s agent ahead of a potential summer move, with the player’s reported new deal containing a complex release clause.
Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato has confirmed recent reports that Victor Osimhen is set to sign a new contract with Napoli, as well as the news that the deal will contain a release clause.
But it seems the clause is complicated and could increase, depending on the club attempting to activate it.
“All that’s missing is the announcement and the definition of the details, but we’re now there: the renewal of Victor Osimhen. It seems like a done deal,” Venerato said (via Sport Witness).
“The last obstacle was the termination clause of the contract…€130m (£112m) is the right figure, but it cannot be ruled out that it could be €140m (£120m) if clubs with high turnover approached him.”
Venerato goes on to confirm that Arsenal have already approached Osimhen’s agent, and the player’s contract extension is effectively more of a “planned farewell”. But the Gunners aren’t the only team in the race, with Chelsea also on his trail.
Reports on social media broke the news of Arsenal’s continued interest in Osimhen last month, with claims that Osimhen is Mikel Arteta’s first-choice centre-forward signing.
Charles Watts reported in May 2022 that Arsenal had held talks with Osimhen’s agent, with the agent flying into London for a meeting with Edu Gaspar.
At the time, Napoli weren’t willing to sell, and Arsenal turned to Gabriel Jesus instead.
But Watts told his YouTube channel in November that Arsenal’s interest in Osimhen would not have gone away, and the Gunners do want a striker in the summer.
Osimhen has seven goals and two assists in his 15 appearances between Serie A and the Champions League so far this season.
He’s helped Napoli through to the last-16 in Europe, where they could be set to face Arsenal, depending on the results of Monday’s draw.
