Arsenal, currently leading the Premier League table, are gearing up for a crucial match against Liverpool at Anfield this weekend.

Mikel Arteta‘s side, having the advantage of a full week’s preparation compared to Liverpool’s midweek Carabao Cup action against West Ham, face several injury challenges.

Jorginho, the Italian midfielder, missed the recent match against Brighton due to a foot injury. However, he may be in contention for the Liverpool game. Speaking about his recovery, Jorginho told football.london, “[He’s] Getting better, getting better.”

Mikel Arteta added, “We had some issues in the camp and with Jorginho too we had another one. It’s five, six now. So, we need players.”

Takehiro Tomiyasu, who sustained a calf injury in the clash against Wolves, is likely to return by late January or early February. Arteta explained, “We had a scan and it’s not good news. He’s got an injury in his calf and he’s going to be out for a while I think.”

Fabio Vieira is recuperating from groin surgery, with an expected return in mid to late January 2024. Arteta explained, “Yeah we’ve got a problem with him. He’s been having some discomfort. We sent him to see a specialist and the advice was to have an operation in his groin. He did that yesterday. We don’t expect him back this side of the winter break.”

Jurrien Timber, the summer signing from Ajax, faces a lengthy recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament rupture sustained in Arsenal’s match against Nottingham Forest.

Mohamed Elneny returned from an injury in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven but was substituted due to a hamstring concern. Arteta remains optimistic about his swift return, commenting, “Mo had to be subbed. He felt something in his hamstring. We did a scan and it doesn’t look too serious so he’ll be with us soon which is very good news.”

Thomas Partey underwent a procedure that is expected to sideline him for the rest of the year. While his participation in the FA Cup third-round clash against Liverpool in early 2024 remains uncertain, Partey is working hard on his rehabilitation.

Arteta stated, “We don’t know [if Partey will be back to face Liverpool in January]. He’s getting a very good evolution in the injury, but it’s a bit early for the time frame.”
