Arsenal are reportedly preparing to make a move for Sporting CP‘s centre-back Gonçalo Inácio in the upcoming January transfer window.

The 22-year-old defender, who has become a key player in Sporting CP’s starting eleven, has been the subject of interest from several top European clubs.

Inácio has been a consistent performer for Sporting this season, featuring in 13 matches in the Portuguese top league, 12 of them as a starter, whilst also scoring a goal.

His performances have not just been limited to domestic competitions; he has also been impressive in the Europa League. Inácio played all six group stage matches and notably scored two goals in the final match against Sturm Graz.

Speculations about Inácio’s future have been rife, with interest reported from clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham. However, it’s now Arsenal who seem to be leading the chase.

According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Arsenal are ready to activate Inácio’s buyout clause, which is believed to be €60 million.

Despite Sporting’s apparent lack of interest in a January sale, the activation of the buyout clause could facilitate a move. A Bola also reports that Arsenal are currently the favourites to secure Inácio’s services if a transfer materialises in January.

Inácio’s contract with Sporting runs until the summer of 2027, following an extension he signed in August of this year. Since his debut last spring, he has also played four international matches for Portugal, scoring two goals.
