Oleksandr Zinchenko has called Ukraine’s upcoming game against Italy “the game of our lives”, as they look to qualify for Euro 2024.

Going into the November international break, Ukraine know that three points in their only game against Italy would send them to Euro 2024.

There are other possible permutations for Ukraine to make the tournament, and we’ll go through those later, but a win would guarantee qualification whatever else happens.

Speaking to the media ahead of the break, Oleksandr Zinchenko was clearly aware of the importance of the match.

“It is going to be a massive game,” Zinchenko said. “For sure, it is going to be the game of our lives.

“Especially now, the toughest time of this country’s independence. To bring some positive news for the Ukrainian people is so important.”

“To have played in the Euros is an amazing achievement already and especially now,” Zinchenko continued.

“We know that while we are wearing the Ukrainian shirt, it is absolutely the proudest moment of our lives and since being a kid, you always dream of playing for the national team.

“But especially now, with the war in our country, we understand completely that every single game, it doesn’t matter what one – even a friendly – when you win the game there are a lot of positive things for our people.”

Ukraine could yet qualify for next summer’s European Championships without beating Italy.

One way to do that would be if Italy fail to win against North Macedonia in their first game of the break. In that scenario, a draw would be enough for Zinchenko’s side.

Alternatively, if Ukraine fail to qualify through the group stage, they’re likely to drop into the play-offs based on their Nations League performance, giving them a second chance.

But only one team in every four will qualify through the play-offs, so Ukraine’s best chance is still getting a result in their one-off match against Italy.

Arsenal have a foot in both camps, with Jorginho receiving a call-up for Italy over the November break. Whichever Gunner you’re backing, the game will be live on Monday, November 20th at 19:45 GMT.
