William Saliba has been named in the BBC Team of the Week for his goalscoring performance against Burnley at the weekend.
Arsenal centre-back William Saliba has been named in Garth Crooks’ BBC Team of the Week for the latest round of fixtures, following the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Burnley.
Crooks highlights that Saliba dominated his Team of the Week selections in the early weeks of the season, but recent defeats for Arsenal have seen him drop out.
The French international was back with a bang at the weekend, though, scoring Arsenal’s second goal to help the team regain the lead after Burnley’s deflected equaliser.
That wasn’t Saliba’s only positive moment of the contest, as he also made one or two excellent covering tackles whilst tracking back on Burnley counters.
Saliba completed 92% of his passes on the day, and he won six of his eight individual duels.
A statistic doing the rounds recently is that Saliba is still yet to pick up his first yellow card of the season, and that didn’t change against Burnley.
For all of his tough tackling, the 22-year-old rarely gives the referee an opportunity to punish him with more than a free-kick.
Saliba will now head off with France for the international break, with Didiers Deschamps’ side set to face Gibraltar and Greece in Euro 2024 qualifiers.
France have already qualified with their current points total, so the last two games will just be about keeping their 100% record going and maintaining their momentum.
For Saliba, the dead-rubber matches are a potential opportunity to show what he can do and break into the team for next summer’s tournament.
