Garth Crooks posted his BBC Team of the Week for the most recent round of fixtures following Sunday’s match between Everton and Manchester United, and Arsenal’s Declan Rice made it into the side.

Arsenal won 1-0 away to Brentford on Saturday, and Rice was a pivotal part of that result, ultimately winning the Man of the Match award.

Rice was a commanding presence in the middle, winning 75% of his duels and completing 89% of his passes, including creating a chance.

But the midfielder’s most important moment came in the form of a goalline clearance, sparing Aaron Ramsdale’s blushes after an error from the goalkeeper left him scrambling.

On that moment and Rice’s influence in general, Crooks said: “The way Declan Rice spotted that Aaron Ramsdale was in some difficulty, got behind his goalkeeper, and positioned himself perfectly to clear the ball off the line was pure genius.

“Rice is proving to be as influential as Martin Odegaard proved to be for the Gunners last season.”

Despite his links to Spurs, Crooks also begrudgingly admitted that if Arsenal can remain top of the league going into the new year, “anything is possible”.

Rice is a large part of the reason Arsenal are top of the league to begin with. He’s scored vital goals against Manchester United and Chelsea, made goalline clearances against Manchester City and Brentford, and he’s hardly had a bad day since joining.

The midfielder has also been excellent time and again in the Champions League, and his focus will now turn to trying to help Arsenal top their group on Wednesday.
