Aaron Ramsdale’s father Nick has revealed that the Arsenal goalkeeper had no clue he wasn’t going to keep playing when David Raya arrived.

Speaking to the Highbury Squad YouTube channel this week, Aaron Ramsdale’s father has suggested he’s not happy with how things are going for his son since David Raya’s arrival at the club on loan from Brentford.

“It is difficult,” Ramsdale Snr. admitted (via Football.London). “David Raya is a great goalkeeper and it is not his fault. He’s just come in as a goalkeeper.

“David Raya, Aaron says, he is a lovely guy and he works hard with him and Aaron’s trying to help him as much as he can to settle in with the squad.

“It’s possibly the way it’s been done. Not knowing the reason why…we did not have a clue, I didn’t have a clue, our family didn’t have a clue, Aaron didn’t have a clue that he was not going to carry on playing.”

“Aaron is going to be the cup goalkeeper, and David Raya is going to be the main man unless something happens, an injury or a sending-off,” the goalkeeper’s father continued.

“Aaron’s got to live with that and he is living with that even though he’s not been told it. By anybody.

“You’ve got to give the guy a chance for God’s sake. Even though the way it’s been done, in my eyes, it’s been wrong and we can talk about that but it’s the decision.”

This isn’t the first time that Ramsdale’s father has spoken out on his behalf, having previously hit out at Jamie Carragher for the pundit’s joke about the goalkeeper.

After that, Ramsdale distanced himself from the comments and suggested he didn’t find they were helpful to his cause.

“It doesn’t help that my dad does it – but it was on a golf trip in Spain with 19 other lads from the local pub – to be honest, I wasn’t too mad at him,” Ramsdale said then.

“He didn’t say anything out of turn, it just wasn’t helpful for the situation, he knew that. He obviously just had a few too many on the golf course!”

The Arsenal man is unlikely to be much happier at his dad’s latest comments, which has put the goalkeeping situation back into the limelight once again over the international break.

Ramsdale would have been hoping to focus on England and a rare potential start in their qualification dead-rubbers against Malta and North Macedonia.
