David Ornstein has named the position he expects Arsenal to target for their next major signing, though it may not be in January.

Two months after the summer deadline and two months before January, we’re now at the midway point between transfer windows.

Arsenal have generally made a very positive start to the season, just two points off the top of the table and unbeaten in the league after 10 matches.

But there have been some slip-ups, namely in exiting the League Cup, losing to RC Lens, and dropping points in three league games they really should have won.

Some Arsenal fans have started to wonder how the club might look to push on again when the next transfer window comes around, and David Ornstein tells The Athletic he believes the next big signing will be a striker.

“When they next make a significant recruit, I reckon that will be a striker,” Ornstein wrote.

“But it will depend on all the normal factors like money, availability, existing options, injuries, and more.

“There was no plan to sign a striker last summer and I suspect in an ideal world for Arsenal that would have been the stance for January, too, with the focus being on next summer.

“Let’s see if that changes, but I don’t know of it doing so yet.”

With Gabriel Jesus’ injury problems, there’s perhaps a bit more of an emphasis on the centre-forward position than there was in the summer.

Each time the Brazilian picks up a new injury, it seems less likely the Gunners will be able to rely on him consistently throughout a full campaign, highlighting the need for a strong alternative.

But it doesn’t seem like anything is particularly advanced just yet, so we’ll see how things develop over the next two months.
