Jorginho appears to have avoided injury and he’s set for a long-awaited return to the Italian national team over the coming week.

After captaining Arsenal in all four of their matches this month so far, Jorginho was forced off early against Burnley on Saturday with a head injury.

Fortunately, Mikel Arteta confirmed after the game that the problem was purely some cuts, and it doesn’t seem to be anything more serious.

“He had a few bad cuts, I think, which they couldn’t sort out on the pitch so we decided to take him out but hopefully, he’s fine,” Arteta said.

“I think he was really good again today. The way this guy is competing, coaching, and supporting the team in any way he can makes me really happy with him.”

The news that Jorginho’s injury isn’t serious is particularly significant because he’s just received a recall to the Italian national team squad.

A regular international for Italy from the end of 2017 until this summer, Jorginho has missed out on the last couple of international breaks completely.

Luciano Spalletti explained in September that the midfielder was being excluded due to his lack of club minutes. But with Jorginho now playing regularly, that has evidently changed.

“I’m very happy for any player that can represent his country and I know what Italy means for him,” Arteta said after Saturday’s game.

“He was desperate to be involved and he fully deserves it, in my opinion.”

Italy face North Macedonia at home on Friday, November 17th at 19:45 GMT, then Ukraine on Monday, November 20th at 19:45 GMT.

The team have the chance to confirm qualification for next year’s European Championships with a couple of good results, but they could be cast into the play-offs if they slip up.
