Former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has embarked on a new journey in football by appointing himself as the interim manager of Italian second division side, Como.

This move follows Fabregas hanging up his boots as a player with the same club during the summer.

Post-retirement, he took up a role in coaching the Como Under-19 squad, whilst also becoming a part-owner of the team alongside another Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry.

The club found itself in need of a manager following the sacking of Moreno Longo, with the team positioned at sixth in the league.

In response, Como announced that Fabregas would step in as the interim manager. The club’s statement read: “Como 1907 and Moreno Longo have parted company. The search for a new Head Coach begins immediately with Cesc Fàbregas and the current coaching staff taking over duties for the interim period.”

This appointment marks Fabregas’ first foray into senior football management. He brings to the role a wealth of experience from a career spanning two decades, during which he lifted the World Cup, the Euros, and clinched numerous titles in England and Spain.

Reflecting on his career, when he retired from playing Fabregas said, “It is with great sadness that the time has come for me to hang up my playing boots.

“From lifting the World Cup, the Euros, to winning everything in England and Spain and nearly all the European trophies, it has been a journey that I’ll never forget.

“After 20 incredible years full of sacrifice, dedication and joy, it’s time to say thank you and goodbye to the beautiful game.”

At 36, Fabregas is set to begin this new chapter in his career, focusing on what he describes as a long-term project with Como.

“This charming football team won my heart from the first minute and came to me at the perfect time in my career. I will grab it with both hands,” he said.
