In their most recent Ligue 1 fixture, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang endured a difficult outing as Olympique de Marseille were held to a goalless draw by Lille OSC.

The former Arsenal captain, known for his prolific scoring record, struggled to leave his mark on the match, leading to audible discontent among the home supporters.

Former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang faced a challenging night as Marseille drew 0-0 with Lille, with the striker failing to score or register a shot on target.

The reaction of the Marseille fans was vocal, with whistles heard as Aubameyang was substituted in the 77th minute, a stark contrast to the ovation for his replacement, Vitinha.

Aubameyang‘s performance comes amid high expectations due to his impressive career with clubs including Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea.

However, the forward, who arrived at Marseille to succeed Alexis Sanchez, has not been able to meet these expectations, scoring just once in the current Ligue 1 season against Le Havre.

At thirty-four, Aubameyang‘s age was apparent against the younger and faster Lille players, and his former asset of speed no longer seems to provide an advantage, rendering his impact on the game less significant.

Marseille coach Gennaro Gattuso defended Aubameyang, stating, “The only difficulty I see is that he is not scoring.

“I feel like it’s fashionable at the moment to always talk about Aubameyang, Aubameyang.

“Honestly, he may have missed two or three passes in the first half, but I do not see a player in great difficulty. Because his name is Aubameyang, precisely, more is expected of him.

“He is not a player who never touches the ball, or who is nonchalant. It’s up to me to put him in the condition to score more goals.”

In total, Aubameyang touched the ball 17 times against Lille, with only one of those touches coming in the opposition box. His xG for teh game was 0.04 with his xA 0.03.

Aubameyang‘s next opportunity to improve things will come in the Europa League match against AEK Athens, where previously he showed promise by scoring twice against Ajax.

Since leaving Arsenal in January, 2022, Aubameyang has played for Barcelona, and Chelsea, as well as Marseille. While he endured an excellent spell in Spain, scoring 13 goals in 24 appearances, his time with Chelsea was poor.

There, he scored just three in 21, a total he has already surpassed in France.

With Marseille, he has five goals in 15 games, but, as mentioned, only one of those goals has come in Ligue 1. In Champions League qualifying, he scored two in two and in the Europa League he currently has two in three.

By comparison, Alexis Sanchez scored 18 in 44 during his time at Marseille, with 14 of those coming in his 35 Ligue 1 games.
