Mikel Arteta is set to defend himself in an FA hearing following his critical remarks after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

Arteta had strongly criticised referees Stuart Attwell and Andy Madley for their decision to award Anthony Gordon‘s goal, calling it “embarrassing” and a “disgrace”.

In response to these comments, Arsenal issued a statement supporting Arteta and compiled a list of controversial decisions to back his stance.

After the media uproar, the FA subsequently charged Arteta for breaching Rule E3.1, alleging that his comments were insulting towards match officials, detrimental to the game, and brought the game into disrepute.

Arteta had until Friday to respond to these charges and could face a touchline ban or other significant penalties.

The issue has arisen at a crucial time for Arsenal, who are preparing for their next Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday.

Depending on whether Arteta receives a punishment before the game, he may or may not be present in the dugout for this fixture. although if he is contesting the charges it is unlikely any ban will be handed out before this weekend.

This situation underscores the tensions between Arsenal and the officiating in the league, with the club feeling they are being ‘singled out’ for scrutiny.
