Arsenal U18s, led by Jack Wilshere, demonstrated commendable resilience in their recent Premier League Cup match, securing a dramatic late victory over Derby County.

Jack Wilshere, following Arsenal U18s’ dramatic 2-1 win over Derby County in the Premier League Cup, praised his team’s resilience and ability to collect a crucial win despite not being at their best.

Wilshere reflected on the game, acknowledging the team’s less-than-ideal performance but highlighted the significance of grinding out results.

He remarked, “It was a strange game. I didn’t think we were anywhere near our best, but, like you said, we won the game. It’s about finding that balance between getting the right result and playing better. The players showed character, finding a way when not at their best.”

Particularly noteworthy was Ismeal Kabia’s contribution, scoring the winning goal in injury time after a long absence due to injury.

Expressing his delight, Wilshere said, “I’m really happy for Kabia on scoring the winner.

“He’s been out for a long time, and he deserves it. I’ve been in that position throughout my career; it’s not a nice feeling, so I’m buzzing he got the winner.”

He further emphasised the importance of character in football, stating, “Everyone on the pitch had that character; that’s the starting point for any career. To have a successful career, you need to be willing to fight and overcome suffering when it’s hard.”

Looking forward, Wilshere discussed the team’s preparation during the upcoming break, focusing on training and the Youth Cup. He stressed the significance of the upcoming period, saying, “It’s a really important period. We want to be in a position that when we come back against Fulham in the league, we’ll try to win that game and get better as a team.”

In the match, Arsenal took an early lead through captain Harrison Dudziak, but Derby County levelled the score before halftime.

The game’s scrappy second half saw Arsenal push for a winner, which finally came through Kabia’s late strike, cementing a significant win for the team.

This victory puts Arsenal at the top of their group with seven points, with their advancement depending on West Ham‘s remaining match.

Next, Arsenal’s U18s will focus on the FA Youth Cup, where they are set to host Crewe Alexandra in the third round.
