Arsenal have made their final decision on David Raya’s option to buy, intending to sign the Brentford goalkeeper permanently in 2024.
Arsenal take on Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, but David Raya won’t be involved in the game, as he’s still technically just on loan from the hosts.
The Gunners signed Raya in the summer on a loan with an option to buy set at £27m.
Yet Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal have already made a decision on that option, opting to trigger the clause and bring Raya in.
Romano claims activation of the buy option is “all guaranteed”, and Raya has already signed his long-term contract with the Gunners for when the move turns permanent.
That won’t happen until June 2024, but there are no doubts that Arsenal will be bringing in the Spaniard permanently when his loan deal expires.
The structure of a loan with an option instead of a straight transfer was purely for FFP reasons, and Romano adds that Arsenal’s financial justification for the loan was accepted by Brentford.
Raya has made 12 appearances for Arsenal this season, between the Premier League and the Champions League.
Since his debut for the team in September, Raya hasn’t missed a game in either competition, though Aaron Ramsdale did come into the side for the two League Cup games.
That run will end today, with Ramsdale set to start against Brentford. But Raya seems to be the clear first-choice goalkeeper at the moment, and you’d expect to see him in the lineup again on Wednesday.
