Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor has levelled accusations of ‘bullying’ against Arsenal Women’s coach Jonas Eidevall following their recent encounter in the Women’s Super League.

In a post-match briefing, Taylor claimed Eidevall’s conduct towards the fourth official during the match amounted to bullying, a statement that has since been challenged by the Arsenal camp.

The controversy emerged after a tightly contested fixture at Meadow Park, where Arsenal clinched a 2-1 victory over Manchester City, handing the visitors their first league defeat of the season.

The match, marked by a fervent sideline exchange between Taylor and Eidevall, brought forth Taylor’s assertions post-game.

Taylor, in his comments to the BBC, stated, “That is always the same with him because he is constantly at the fourth official and I think it is bullying. I am protecting the fourth official but that’s not my job.”

His pointed criticism came despite no formal warnings or bookings for Eidevall from the match officials throughout the game.

Arsenal’s win was solidified by a dramatic late goal from Stina Blackstenius, preceded by an early opener from Steph Catley.

The Gunners had to withstand a surge by City, who drew level with a strike from Chloe Kelly and struck the woodwork on two occasions.

Despite these challenges, Arsenal emerged victorious, although City’s Taylor suggested the better side lost, citing the missed opportunities that his team failed to capitalise on.

“I think everyone who saw that game could see we should have won. We are feeling a little bit robbed,” Taylor reflected on the game’s flow and his side’s dominance for large periods.

He drew parallels to the previous season, underscoring the need for improvement at the ‘top end of the pitch’ despite what he considered a commendable performance from his team.

Eidevall, meanwhile, conceded that the match’s opening phase caused concern. “The first 15 minutes stressed me out. I don’t think anyone planned to lose the ball in the way we did. So no, it didn’t go to plan. I’m happy the players could cope,” he said, acknowledging the resilience of the Arsenal side.

Arsenal, reportedly disappointed by Taylor’s claims, viewed the match as a display of competitive spirit and strenuous effort. The accusations of bullying cast a shadow over the post-match narrative, but the focus within the Arsenal team remains on the strength and character shown to secure a win against formidable opposition.

The match has undoubtedly intensified the rivalry between the two teams, with implications beyond the scoreline. Taylor’s allegations against Eidevall have added an extra layer of tension to future encounters, as both sides continue to vie for supremacy in the league.

Despite the off-pitch disputes, Arsenal’s victory marks an essential step in their campaign, showcasing a blend of tactical awareness and tenacity that kept the team afloat amidst Manchester City’s dominance.
