Arsenal have had an extremely poor record against Manchester City in recent years, with no league wins home or away from 2015 until 2023.

Before Sunday, the Gunners’ only three victories over that time period were in the FA Cup (twice) and in the Community Shield. Even then, the Community Shield win was on penalties.

So to pull off a 1-0 win at the weekend was a significant moment for Arsenal, both for the three points and to finally end the recent run of Premier League defeats.

As a result, it should be no surprise that Arsenal had a couple of players in the BBC and Premier League Teams of the Week.

Garth Crooks selected William Saliba and Declan Rice for his BBC Team of the Week, and Alan Shearer followed suit in naming the same two players in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Crooks wrote of Saliba that the defender was a “steadying influence” and “proving invaluable” to Arsenal.

“I rate Saliba as highly as I rated Sol Campbell,” Crooks added. “The France international has the same kind of presence in defence as the former England man and is just as quick.”

On Rice, Crooks wrote that “there can be no doubt in my mind that Arsenal’s purchase of Declan Rice, admittedly for an obscene amount of money, once again demonstrates the Gunners’ determination to leave no stone unturned to bring the Premier League title to the red part of north London.”

Shearer praised Saliba for a “brilliant performance”, writing that the French international was “a commanding presence at the back as he kept Haaland and co quiet”.

As for Rice, Shearer claimed the England man “proved his worth as a key summer signing with a big-match performance against the champions. He was solid from start to finish”.

It was a great day for two of Arsenal’s key men, and they very much earned the praise for their performances.
