David Raya is still expected to start for Arsenal against Sevilla on Tuesday, despite all the talk about his performance against Chelsea.

The Evening Standard report that David Raya is expected to remain in goal for Arsenal’s match away to Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Raya has reportedly established himself as Mikel Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeper, and the Gunners boss seems unlikely to take him out of the team already.

The on-loan Brentford goalkeeper has kept four clean sheets in his first seven games, including shut-outs on Arsenal’s Champions League return against PSV Eindhoven and in a win over Premier League champions Manchester City.

But he’s also had shaky moments, including losing possession to RC Lens in Arsenal’s second Champions League fixture, and having some difficulties playing out from the back against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

There was also plenty of debate over Mykhaylo Mudryk’s goal at the weekend, though that seemed somewhat overblown.

The finish was definitely unintentional, with Mudryk not even looking at the goal before kicking the ball, and it just looped perfectly beyond Raya’s reach.

It happens, as we saw with Aaron Ramsdale conceding to Sporting Lisbon last season. If the finish is good enough (whether by skill or luck), any goalkeeper can be caught out.

Goalkeeping in 2023 is about taking risks. You need to play out bravely, you need to have a high starting position to claim crosses or sweep up through balls, and when it goes wrong that’s just the cost of doing business.

It’s certainly unfortunate that these moments have come so early on in Raya’s Arsenal career, but that can happen. You’d hope things would even out across the course of a full season.
