England may end up playing their entire Euro 2028 campaign at Wembley, and they could have a strong Arsenal contingent at the tournament.
Earlier this week, UEFA confirmed that the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland would host the 2028 European Championships, with the joint bid running unopposed in the end.
Matches are set to be held at 10 different stadiums, as follows:
- Wembley Stadium, London
- Principality Stadium, Cardiff
- Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London
- Etihad Stadium, Manchester
- Everton Stadium, Liverpool
- St. James’ Park, Newcastle
- Villa Park, Birmingham
- Hampden Park, Glasgow
- Aviva Stadium, Dublin
- Casement Park, Belfast
But the host nations will have the chance to lobby to play their games at their national stadiums, meaning England at Wembley, Scotland at Hampden Park, Ireland at the Aviva Stadium, Wales at the Principality Stadium, and Northern Ireland at Casement Park.
The Evening Standard report that England have a strong case to play their matches at Wembley, given the commercial and logistical benefits of doing so.
At the very least, the semi-final and final of the tournament will be played at Wembley, so England would be at home if they can make it that far.
A final decision on the match schedule and the qualification process won’t be discussed until after Euro 2024.
Usually, up to two host countries can qualify automatically for the Euros. But all five host nations have chosen to go through qualifying, with the two spots held in reserve for any that fail to make it.
Arsenal have a good chance of forming the backbone of England’s Euro 2028 side, given the age of their internationals.
Much of the current squad are still in their early twenties, and none of them will be older than 30 in June 2028.
The likes of Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice will be in their primes, and the tournament is far enough away for other players not currently involved to have made their way into the squad.
Age of Arsenal’s potential England internationals in June 2028
- Aaron Ramsdale: 30
- Ben White: 30
- Declan Rice: 29
- Emile Smith Rowe: 27
- Bukayo Saka: 26
- Eddie Nketiah: 29
- Reiss Nelson: 28
