Arsenal have reportedly moved ahead of Barcelona in the race to sign 18-year-old Belgian midfielder Arthur Vermeeren.
In a significant development, Arsenal are reportedly leading Barcelona in the race to sign Royal Antwerp’s 18-year-old Belgian midfielder Arthur Vermeeren.
While Barcelona were also keen on the young talent, recent reports suggest that Arsenal are the front-runners to secure his signature.
According to various reports, Barcelona were initially interested in Vermeeren as they sought a younger player to serve as a natural replacement for Oriol Romeu.
The Belgian player was high on their list of potential recruits. However, reports from SPORT suggest that Arsenal are now the favourites to land Vermeeren.
The financials of the deal are also in Arsenal’s favour.
It is believed that Vermeeren could be available for around €20 million (£17m), a fee that the Gunners are reportedly willing to meet.
While Barcelona’s financial situation is somewhat uncertain, it is suggested that they could match Arsenal’s offer if their finances improve in the coming months.
That said, Barcelona appear to have shifted their attention to Gabriel Moscardo, an 18-year-old who currently plays for Corinthians.
Arthur Vermeeren is currently with the Belgian national team and made his official debut during their 3-2 win against Austria in the Euro qualifiers.
He is scheduled to play against Sweden on Monday, October 16.
Given his current form and potential, it’s understandable why Arsenal are keen on acquiring the teenager.
Vermeeren has one goal and five assists in 15 appearances this season and is under contract until the summer of 2026.
