Matt Turner could end up as Nottingham Forest’s second-choice goalkeeper this season, despite his departure from Arsenal to play more regularly.
Matt Turner left Arsenal in the summer transfer window in search of minutes, with David Raya joining in an initial loan deal from Brentford as his replacement.
Turner joined Nottingham Forest, and the early signs appeared to be that he’d get plenty of opportunities with the club.
The goalkeeper started all four of Forest’s Premier League games ahead of the international break, as well as playing in the League Cup. Most notably, he kept a clean sheet against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to secure his team three points.
Yet Turner’s place reportedly isn’t assured.
The Athletic report that the feeling at Forest is that Greek international Odysseas Vlachodimos will be the first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Turner.
The number-one shirt is Turner’s to lose “in the short term”, but it remains to be seen just how long he can hold onto it.
Vlachodimos only joined Forest at the beginning of this month, too late to feature in the game against Chelsea. So we don’t yet have any games to go on in assessing which goalkeeper is favoured by Forest boss Steve Cooper.
It would certainly be a shame for Turner to end up back as a second-choice Premier League goalkeeper, but it sounds like he’ll at least get the chance to avoid that fate in the coming weeks.
If he can play well enough and keep more clean sheets, perhaps Vlachodimos will never get the starting opportunity that those at Forest believe he’s in line for.
