When the Arsenal team news for Wednesday’s League Cup clash against Brentford was announced, Charles Sagoe Jr was a somewhat surprising inclusion in the lineup.

Sagoe Jr has been a strong performer for the Arsenal academy teams over the last year or so, but he’d only made the first-team squad on one previous occasion, and he’d never made a substitute appearance for the side.

To suddenly find himself in the starting lineup was a big step forward, and Sagoe Jr ended up playing 68 minutes of the 1-0 win as Arsenal progressed to the next round.

Writing on Twitter after the game, Sagoe Jr was clearly delighted to get the opportunity.

“It’s a dream come true to have made my professional debut with Arsenal last night,” Sagoe Jr said.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family and it’s an experience I’ll never forget. Thank you for your support!”

Sagoe Jr completed 85% of his passes on the night, as well as completing his only attempted dribble. His performance was made all the more impressive for the fact he was out on the right, a position he rarely plays for the academy.

The youngster generally features on the left for the u21s, though he has played centrally at times as well.

With Arsenal progressing to the next round, Sagoe Jr may get further chances for League Cup minutes as the competition goes on, though the return of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard from injury will make that more difficult.

But the chance to make a senior debut for Arsenal is not one that comes around for every talented youngster at the club, so Sagoe Jr can be proud to have had that moment.
