Aaron Ramsdale faces mounting competition from David Raya for Arsenal’s No 1 spot.

With David Raya showcasing his skills in training sessions, Aaron Ramsdale could find his role as Arsenal’s premier goalkeeper under threat.

Sources within the club reportedly suggest that head coach Mikel Arteta is contemplating a reshuffle between the posts.

Aaron Ramsdale has unquestionably been the linchpin in Arsenal’s defensive unit since his 2021 transfer from Sheffield United. His proficiency was recognised last season when he was included in the PFA Team of the Year.

However, a sense of uncertainty now shrouds his spot as the club’s No 1 choice in goal.

David Raya, who arrived at the Emirates this summer on loan from Brentford, has made waves in training sessions, especially with his impeccable ball distribution skills from the back.

This has led to speculation within the club that Mikel Arteta is willing to afford Raya a spell in the first team.

As Ramsdale serves as England’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Jordan Pickford, the looming competition adds an extra layer of complexity.

“David has the unique ability to play out from the back with extreme accuracy,” said an insider source at Arsenal. “This could serve our current tactical approach well.”

Intriguingly, Raya’s first major opportunity to showcase his capabilities could come against his former club, Brentford, in the Carabao Cup tie scheduled for September 27.

Generally, Premier League rules prevent loan players from playing against their parent clubs, but it’s understood that Brentford are not expected to object to his participation in the match.

Arsenal, who secured Raya on a season-long loan with an option for a permanent deal, are visibly keen on examining all their options. Arteta’s decision remains shrouded in mystery, although it’s noted that the Spanish goalkeeper has won the manager over during training.

It could be a matter of time before Arteta’s decision becomes clear, but Ramsdale certainly can’t afford to be complacent.

His erstwhile unchallenged position appears increasingly precarious as Raya continues to make a compelling case for his inclusion.
