Former Premier League referee, Mark Halsey, recently opened up about an intense encounter with Arsenal Invincible and Chelsea legend, Ashley Cole.

In a candid revelation, former Premier League referee Mark Halsey shed light on an intense confrontation with former Arsenal man and Chelsea stalwart, Ashley Cole.

Halsey, who oversaw 280 top-flight games from August 1999 to 2013, disclosed the heated episode on the ‘Undr The Cosh’ podcast.

The 62-year-old referee had the privilege of officiating many significant matches, one of which was Chelsea’s clash against Tottenham in the 2008 League Cup final.

With such an extensive career, it was inevitable that Halsey would face moments of disagreement with players over his decisions.

One such incident, between Burnley and Chelsea at Turf Moor in the early 2010s, led to an almost explosive altercation with Cole, the celebrated England defender.

“I’d just come back from battling cancer. It was Burnley vs Chelsea and it was the first-half,” Halsey recounted, “I don’t know how many decisions I gave against Ashley. Something happened. He weren’t happy and we were walking all the way down the tunnel.”

The altercation, as Halsey recollected, was marked by intense exchange of words.

“He was effing me, I was effing and jeffing back at him. We were hammer and tongs at each other and I went like that [squared up] to him, and my own guy grabbed me and threw me back in the dressing room,” he said.

Halsey’s career took a brief pause in 2009 when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, necessitating a break from football to treat the cancerous tumour in his throat.

He made his return in March 2010, carrying on his duties until the culmination of the 2012/13 season.

Such confrontations between referees and players often remain in the annals of Premier League history, but Halsey revealed that the tension with Cole was ephemeral. Their paths crossed again in a hotel a few years after the incident, where Cole broached the topic.

“Do you remember the bust-up we had in the tunnel?” Cole queried.

Halsey’s resonant response was: “Do I remember it? I wanted to f***ing lump you!”

However, time tends to mellow even the most heated of exchanges. Halsey added that the confrontation is now water under the bridge.

This admission from the experienced referee offers an intriguing look into the challenges faced by officials in maintaining order both on and off the field. As the Premier League’s annals get richer, episodes like this serve as a reminder of the passion and intensity that English football evokes in all its stakeholders.
