Mikel Arteta has praised Kai Havertz for his intelligence in the way he’s adapted to playing multiple roles at Arsenal.

After dropping out of the team against Everton at the weekend, Kai Havertz returned to the Arsenal starting lineup in the Champions League on Wednesday, playing the full 90 in the 4-0 win.

The midfielder looked to be back in form, linking up nicely with his teammates and playing one particularly clever chipped pass to Gabriel Jesus – who should have scored.

Havertz is yet to get a goal of his own since joining, but Mikel Arteta believes that’s the only thing holding him back right now.

“He was very connected today in the game,” Arteta said. “It’s true that I ask him to play in two different roles in regard to the opponent’s behaviours.

“He’s so intelligent the way he does it. It’s just finishing one or two actions that we had again, but it’s coming and he’s so willing to do it.”

Former Arsenal defender Lauren also recently suggested it’s only a matter of time before Havertz hits his stride at the club.

“Kai Havertz is a top player, and top players at some point always perform, so I have no doubts about him,” Lauren said.

“He’s a great player but sometimes new signings just need some time to settle and adapt to the new system. Some players take more time than others.

“But Havertz has played for Germany, Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea at the highest level.

“This is not by chance. So he will go on to perform well for Arsenal and be a successful signing, I have no doubts about this. He’ll go on to be a key player for the club.

“There’s many games this season, Arsenal are playing in four competitions, so there’s going to be plenty of opportunities for his quality to shine. He’s one of the most talented players Arsenal have in their squad and we’ll see that soon.”

Havertz perhaps has a little more to overcome to win people over at Arsenal, coming from a rival club who were playing badly.

But with performances like Wednesday night’s, the 24-year-old should start to win plaudits before long.
