Arsenal have confirmed Albert Sambi Lokonga has joined Luton Town on a season-long loan.
The move comes a month after a previously anticipated transfer to Burnley unravelled.
- Albert Sambi Lokonga has been loaned to Luton Town for the duration of the season, after a deal with Burnley fell apart.
- The midfielder had previously been on loan at Crystal Palace, and initially joined Arsenal from Anderlecht in 2021.
- Lokonga’s loan move comes with a £500k fee and no option or obligation to buy.
Just last month, it seemed that Lokonga was on the brink of joining Burnley. However, negotiations met an impasse, complicating any potential move for the Arsenal midfielder.
Luton Town pounced on the chance to add to their midfield after the Burnley move broke down. The club’s interest appeared unanticipated, making it a surprise move in the transfer window’s waning moments.
Last season, Lokonga spent a part of his campaign on loan at Crystal Palace, where he was afforded nine appearances.
Lokonga joined Arsenal in 2021 from Anderlecht, making the progression from Belgian football to the Premier League. During his time with Arsenal, he was often cited as a promising midfield talent but faced a congested lineup, restricting his playing time.
Palace will pay a £500k fee for the loan and will not have an option or obligation to buy him given he will be free next summer.
His contract with Arsenal runs until 2026 but it seems unlikely he has a future at the club under Mikel Arteta.
