Matt Turner has given some advice to incoming Arsenal signing David Raya, as the Brentford goalkeeper prepares to compete with Aaron Ramsdale.

David Raya is set to sign for Arsenal imminently, with reports suggesting the deal could be confirmed within the next 24 hours.

The goalkeeper is joining on an initial loan from Brentford, but the Gunners will have a £27m option to buy at the end of the season.

There have also been reports that the option will become an obligation if Raya makes a certain number of appearances, so it seems very likely he’ll end up playing for Arsenal permanently.

But Raya won’t arrive at his new club as the guaranteed number one. Aaron Ramsdale currently has that spot, and Raya will have to try and win it off the England international.

Matt Turner recently departed for Nottingham Forest, after gaining first-hand experience of competing with Ramsdale for a year.

Speaking to ESPN this week, Turner had some advice for Raya.

“Work hard, it’s not going to be easy,” Turner said. “No matter how well you train, make the most of your opportunities, I guess, but Aaron’s a really great goalkeeper.

“But I guess also the culture. You need to understand the culture of being at Arsenal.

“You need to be able to push, but also support and I think that’s something that I did really well. I was pushing, but I was also there to support, not only Aaron but the best of the team.

“There’s no doubt that I pushed him every single day, he became a really solid goalkeeper last year. It felt like every time I played well in the Europa League or FA Cup he followed that up with two or three really good performances in the league.”

“Every time I thought the door was a little bit cracked, he stepped his performances up on the pitch and I know I pushed him every day in training and I can hold that close to my heart.

“I’m happy to see him doing well and I’m hoping that he can stay between the sticks.”

Ramsdale and Turner certainly seemed to get along well, and hopefully, Raya can build a similarly strong relationship with his new rival for a starting spot.
