Fabrizio Romano reports that Nuno Tavares will sign his contract as a Nottingham Forest player on Wednesday, with Arsenal set to receive a loan fee close to £2m.

The left-back will also have a £12m purchase option in his Forest deal, but the clause isn’t mandatory. If Forest opt not to activate it, Tavares will return to Arsenal at the end of the season.

The Daily Mail initially broke the news this week that Forest had revived their bid to sign Tavares. That move initially appeared to have collapsed, with Aston Villa then showing an interest, but Forest came back in for the defender and quickly secured a deal.

Football.London reported earlier in the window that both Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg had made approaches for Tavares, but the player wanted to continue to play in the Premier League.

With two years left on his deal, Arsenal were open to selling the former Benfica man, but for now, it’s only a loan.

Tavares finally made his return to training with Arsenal at the start of this month, after his loan spell with Marseille last season and subsequent participation in the u21 European Championship over the summer.

The defender didn’t initially have a number on his shirt or his shorts in training pictures, after he lost the number 20 to Jorginho. But he’s now seemingly been assigned the number 28.

Marseille had looked at making Tavares’ deal permanent after his loan, but they didn’t have an option to buy and didn’t end up agreeing on a price before sending him back to Arsenal.
