In recent comments, Michael Duff, the Swansea manager, underlined that Charlie Patino, currently on loan from Arsenal, requires further acclimatisation to the rigours of Championship football.

The England Under-20 international recently got his first start for the Swans against Coventry, following a commendable performance the week before against West Brom.

  • Michael Duff emphasises Charlie Patino’s need for more time to adjust at Swansea.
  • Duff also had praise for the highly-rated Arsenal loanee
  • Despite the draw with Coventry, Duff remains optimistic about the team’s future prospects.

After joining Swansea on loan from Arsenal, Charlie Patino made his full debut against Coventry.

The teenager had shown his promise in the game against West Brom, where despite a 3-2 defeat, his substitute appearance caught the attention of many.

After the game against Coventry, Michael Duff said patience was needed regarding Patino’s development and potential impact in Swansea.

Highlighting Patino’s relatively limited experience, Duff commented, “He’s 19 years old so he’s got a lot to learn.”

Comparing Patino’s nascent career with seasoned Championship players, Duff added, “He’s had one season of football, so if you’re coming in and asking him to dominate Championship games against players that have played 300 or 400 games, it’s tough.”

Yet, there’s optimism about the young Arsenal loanee’s impact in south Wales.

Duff believes in Patino’s potential, “We think he makes us better. He does different things in different positions so it always gives you another option.”

Swansea are still waiting for their first Championship victory under Duff.

Patino’s U-turn

Earlier in the window, reports suggested Patino was not keen on another loan after spending last season with Blackpool. Reliable reports claimed that he was hoping for a permanent exit – with Arsenal looking to include a buy-back clause in any potential deal.

But the situation changed, and the midfielder joined Swansea for the season.

At the time of his signing, Duff said, “His pedigree speaks for itself with the football club he’s at. A young player but he’s played 40-odd games in the Championship which is a tough ask for anybody his age.

“I know he got relegated with Blackpool, but he’ll be much better for all of the experiences he’s had and hopefully we can benefit from that.”
