Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Matteo Guendouzi were the hero and villain for Marseille on Tuesday, as they lost their Champions League qualifier on penalties.

Marseille went into their Champions League qualifier second leg against Panathinaikos on Tuesday with a 1-0 deficit to overturn, having lost to the Greek side away from home a week earlier.

But the French side were clearly up for the game from the off, and it took just two minutes for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to open the scoring.

The former Arsenal striker raced in behind the defence, latching onto a through ball and rounding the Panathinaikos goalkeeper before rolling into an empty net for 1-0, or 1-1 on aggregate.

Before the half was over, it was 2-0. This time, Aubameyang made a run at the near post and poked home a cross from Jonathan Clauss, turning the tie on its head and giving Marseille the upper hand.

Early in the second half, it looked like Aubameyang had wrapped the game up. The forward raced down the left-hand side, squaring for Ismaila Sarr to finish and seemingly make it 3-0. But the offside flag was up and the goal didn’t count.

That ended up proving a pivotal moment, as Marseille failed to extend their lead and remained just 2-1 ahead on aggregate all the way into injury time.

In the final minute of added time, substitute Matteo Guendouzi handled the ball in the penalty area, with referee Michael Oliver awarding a penalty after a VAR check. Fotis Ioannidis converted to level the aggregate scoreline.

The tie went to penalties, and Guendouzi was the only player to miss one as Panathinaikos won the shootout 5-3.

It was a night to forget for the former Arsenal man, especially after the other former Gunner in the side had put Marseille in the driving seat.

Marseille will now play in the Europa League this season, and Arsenal won’t have a Champions League reunion with their former players.
