In light of strong interest from Real Madrid and Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad, Mikel Arteta has reiterated that Gabriel is not leaving Arsenal. The statement came after the defender was once more left out of Arsenal’s starting XI against Crystal Palace.

Gabriel’s absence in the starting lineup of both of Arsenal’s opening Premier League matches has sparked speculation regarding his future at the Emirates. Arteta, however, was resolute that his absence was solely a tactical decision, having no deeper significance.

Arteta watched as his side claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Monday night, owing to a second-half penalty scored by captain Martin Odegaard.

The team had been reduced to 10 men after Takehiro Tomiyasu was unfairly dismissed, prompting Gabriel’s introduction to strengthen the defence, replicating his move on the opening day against Nottingham Forest.

The Arsenal boss explained post-match when asked if there was any truth to the rumours, “Nothing at all.

“It’s about the games we were expecting. How I wanted to defend and attack.

“I believe it was the best thing, he played in both games and helped us win both games. He was really good today when he came on, he was dominant and will play a lot of games.”

Real Madrid’s need for a new centre back this summer follows the injury to Eder Militao. They see Gabriel as a possible replacement. Al-Ittihad, too, are reported to be considering a deal for the 25-year-old defender.

Arteta’s confidence in Gabriel’s continued contribution to Arsenal is clear, as he expects the defender to play a significant role in their Champions League campaign upon their return to the competition.

The Premier League club’s determination will likely be tested in the days ahead, with the transfer window nearing its closure and interest from major clubs persisting.
