Arsenal and Nottingham Forest have confirmed a deal that sees Matt Turner leave the club on a permanent basis.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we would like to thank Matt for his contribution to Arsenal and wish him and his family all the best in their new chapter,” Arsenal Sporting Director Edu said.

“Matt is an international goalkeeper with the United States and is at a stage of his career when he needs to be playing regularly. He is leaving with our best wishes to join Nottingham Forest.”

29-year-old Matt Turner signed for Arsenal £5.5m (plus a reported £2.5m in bonuses) last summer from New England Revolution and made seven appearances for the Gunners, conceding four and keeping four cleansheets.

He signed a three-year deal worth a reported £35,000-per-week.

Valued at just £4.3m when Arsenal bought him, Revolution are believed to have a sell-on fee in his contract which will take a chunk of the small profit Arsenal will make from his move to Forest.

He is now valued at around £6.89m according to Transfermarkt, making him the 18th most valuable American in the sport.

Just ahead of his move to Arsenal in 2022, Turner said, “I always want to be able to challenge myself at the highest level I possibly can.

“It’s been tough for goalkeepers to get moves. So I understand, I’m 27 and it’s something that I really want to do and really want to accomplish.

“At the same time, going into a World Cup year, you have to play smart.

“Going overseas and getting into a situation where maybe I’m not playing, or maybe I don’t adapt well to being in a foreign country before a World Cup might be challenging.

“There’s a lot of things I can take from [the U.S.] and apply with the Revolution for the rest of 2022, and then going into a World Cup, after a World Cup, we can revisit.

“But next 12 months, next four months, next whatever, if it make sense I would love to.”

The move to London saw Turner cement his place as the USMNT’s number one keeper but it always seemed an almost impossible task to replicate that at Arsenal with Aaron Ramsdale ahead of him.

His bench status in the Premier League saw calls come from other Americans for him to find a new club where he would play regularly.

Turner also explained that he found it hard to turn down the chance to play in the Premier League, especially for Arsenal, but none of his games came in that competition.

With Champions League football back on the horizon, Arsenal are expected to bring in Brentford’s David Raya, with concerns clearly hanging over Turner’s ability to perform to the required level in that competition.

Turner comes from Park Ridge in New Jersey, a small borough of just under 9,000 people who tend to vote Democrat.

Before signing for New England Revolution, Turner spent time with Fairfield Stags and Jersey Express. He signed for NER in 2016 but then spent some time on loan with Richmond Kicker.

Just seven years ago he wasn’t even considered good enough for the MLS draft and now here he is, in the Premier League.

“It’s an amazing story,” USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter said last year.

“His work ethic, his belief in himself and his never-give-up attitude, it’s a great story and Matt is a great guy, a great team-mate. We’re lucky to have him.

“Tonight was an example where he did everything he had to do. He was calm in all situations, wasn’t tested much, but he was there when we needed him and he looked like a guy that’s going to Arsenal for sure.”

Turner is an expert penalty saver, having stopped nine of the 20 he has faced in his career.
