Jorginho has admitted he called up Kai Havertz to tell him to join Arsenal when he heard the transfer rumours earlier this summer.

Jorginho and Kai Havertz were close friends during their time together at Chelsea, so when Jorginho heard that Arsenal were interested in his old teammate this summer, he didn’t waste any time.

“When I heard that it was a possibility, I called him straight away,” Jorginho admitted.

“I was like ‘Is this true?’. And he was like ‘Yeah, it’s possible’. I was like ‘You need to come!’

“I just want the best for everyone. Everyone wins here! He wins, it’s a good project for him, and it’s going to be amazing for the club, for the team. So it was a win-win.”

Funnily enough, the two players also had a phone conversation shortly before Jorginho joined Arsenal, as Havertz confirmed earlier this year.

“I played with Jorginho for two and a half years, he changed next to me, I loved being with him, and then…” Havertz recalled.

“He calls me one evening and says: ‘I’m gone.’ I was like: ‘What the? How is this possible?’ This is how quick things change.”

The two clearly weren’t happy to be parting ways, so Jorginho would have been excited to hear his old friend might be on the way to join him in north London.

The hope now is that they can capitalise on their on-field relationship with Arsenal, whenever they get the chance to share the pitch.

That might not always be possible, with Declan Rice joining for a club-record fee to fill at least one of the midfield positions.

But with the return of the Champions League, Arsenal aren’t likely to be able to play one lineup in both competitions. They’re sure to get some competitive chances together eventually.
