Kai Havertz admits he enjoyed watching Arsenal last season, and he’s hoping to achieve a lot with the club after his unofficial debut on Thursday.

Kai Havertz made his friendly debut for Arsenal in the second half against FC Nurnberg on Thursday night, coming on in the 1-1 draw to kick off his pre-season preparations with his new club.

Speaking after the game, Havertz admitted he enjoyed watching Arsenal even when he was a Chelsea player, and he’s glad now to be with the Gunners.

“You saw already what Arsenal have achieved last year,” Havertz began. “It’s a young group and from outside, when I watched them last year, it was always fun to watch them.

“I felt the energy behind the club, it’s a historic club, it’s just great now to be here and hopefully we’re going to have a good time and hopefully achieve a lot of things.”

One of the questions surrounding Havertz’s transfer revolved around the position he might end up playing in for Arsenal.

The 24-year-old was used in midfield against Nurnberg on Thursday, but Mikel Arteta wouldn’t be drawn into committing himself to one position for the new signing.

“We will see,” Arteta said of Havertz’s position on Thursday. “We have to see how he adapts and get to know each other and build relationships.

“Football is about that and time will tell where he sees best.

“Every player is keen to help him and he’s settled well. He’s a really good character. Really humble. He wants to play for us and win with us and we are delighted to have him.”

That being said, with the success Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Bukayo Saka had as a front three last season, it’s much easier to see Havertz slotting in as a midfielder than breaking up the front three.

Given the German’s height, he could make a good alternative to Jesus up front in certain situations.

If Arsenal ever resort to putting crosses into the box as a plan B late in games, Havertz is probably their best option as a centre-forward in that scenario.

But in general, you’d expect the former Chelsea man to play a deeper role than he did at Stamford Bridge.
