Charlton Athletic bags Arsenal’s Young Star

Charlton Athletic were thrilled to announce the arrival of Freya Godfrey on a season-long loan from Arsenal.

The 18-year-old midfielder, who just signed her first professional contract with Arsenal in June 2023, will spend the 2023/24 season at the Barclays Women’s Championship club.

Godfrey, originally from Essex, began her football journey with the Essex FA’s Regional Talent Club before transitioning into Arsenal’s academy at the age of 12.

Known for her attacking prowess, Godfrey scored 13 goals in 18 appearances in the WSL Academy League.

Last season, she showcased her skills at Ipswich Town while still remaining registered with Arsenal, where she delivered several quality performances and even scored the decisive goal on the last day of the season.

Godfrey made her WSL debut for Arsenal on 10 May 2023, coming off the bench in the 4-0 win over Brighton.

Her second appearance followed a week later at Everton.

As a young international, she has represented England from the U14 level all the way to the U19s, demonstrating her significant potential.

In her first interview as a Charlton player, Godfrey expressed her excitement, stating, “I’m buzzing, I can’t wait to get started.

“I’ve seen the way that the team has been developing throughout the years, getting better and better, and it’s just something I wanted to be a part of.”

Godfrey’s move to Charlton Athletic promises to be an exciting new chapter in her burgeoning career and one Arsenal fans will watch with a keen eye.
