  • Arsenal now includes eight of the top twenty most valuable players in the Premier League, thanks to their strategic signings.
  • Recent transfers Kai Havertz and Declan Rice feature prominently on the list, showcasing the club’s ambition.
  • Despite recent additions, Mikel Arteta’s summer spending isn’t over yet, further fortifying Arsenal’s position in the ranking.

The anticipation at the Emirates has been electrifying since the start of the summer transfer window. Mikel Arteta, determined to build on last season’s success, when Arsenal gave the reigning champions, Manchester City, a solid run for their money.

The biggest transfer buzz surrounds Declan Rice who joins Kai Havertz and defender Jurrien Timber helping Arsenal to become home to eight of the twenty most valuable players in the Premier League.

How are these player values calculated?

CIES Football Observatory uses a complex method that takes into account factors such as a player’s age, ability, nationality, and the team they play for, assuming three or more years of a player’s contract remaining.

Other Premier League giants also have their share in the top twenty. Manchester City claims five spots, whereas Liverpool and Manchester United have three and two, respectively.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli have secured their places in the top 10.

Meanwhile, Kai Havertz and Declan Rice have taken the 11th and 17th spots respectively, further strengthening Arsenal’s position.

Interestingly, Rice’s transfer from West Ham United, clocking in at £105m, will make him one of the most expensive British players ever.

However, CIES’s valuation is lower, at just over £65m.

Rice’s value is slightly less than Havertz’s, who was purchased by Arsenal for up to £65m from Chelsea. All of these rankings indicate a steadfast commitment to strategic investment by the North London club, thereby reshaping the landscape of the Premier League’s most valuable players.

But the buck doesn’t stop with just player acquisition. For instance, at the start of June, CIES incorporated contract length into their valuations.

Consequently, Arsenal secured six spots among the twenty most valuable Premier League players. This puts them one ahead of both Manchester City and Liverpool.

The new signings are all part of an ambitious £575m rebuild at Arsenal under Arteta. This includes five of the eight most valuable players and Gabriel, the 23rd most valuable player in the league.

Of course, a large part of player value depends on age. All the Arsenal players in the top 25 were born in 1997 or later, indicating they may not have hit their peak yet. This fact coupled with the quality depth the new signings provide makes a compelling case for Arsenal’s title challenge against Manchester City.

In the previous season, Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus indicated that the title challenge had faltered when William Saliba was injured. The addition of Jurrien Timber, valued at just under £50m million, offers Arsenal a much-needed buffer in the centre-back position.

Arteta’s spending isn’t over yet, but the early signings suggest that Arsenal understands what it takes to build on last season’s title push. The summer of 2023 could prove to be a turning point for the North London Club in the quest to dominate the Premier League’s most valuable players list.
