Arsenal’s engagement with the transfer market has taken an interesting turn, as reports suggest their focus on Sporting defender, Ousmane Diomande, is reigniting.

Following a month-long break, the story of Arsenal’s interest in Ousmane Diomande, the Sporting defender, is back on the radar.

Sporting had initially ‘locked’ the player for the summer, unless his hefty €80m release clause was triggered.

Yet, as the market noise around Diomande grows, there is, reportedly, anticipation of a significant ‘tempting offer’ that could lead to his exit from Sporting.

Sporting’s earlier assertion that Diomande would only depart for the full €80m seems to be wavering.

Talk of ‘tempting offers’ implies that Sporting may be willing to accept a lesser amount for the player they signed in January for €7.5m.

Although no specific club is named as making such a bid, Arsenal are the only club mentioned in this context, hinting at their interest in the player.

This is not new for the Gunners who had already shown keenness on Diomande’s signing in January.

Six months ago, it was reported that Arsenal had ceased their pursuit of the then 19-year-old centre-back from FC Midtjylland.

Midtjylland’s €10m valuation had been a sticking point.

That being said, it’s hard to see how the extortionate amount Sporting want for him now would be attractive to Arsenal.

Diomande honed his skills on loan in the Portuguese second tier for the first half of last season, putting in a commendable performance for CD Mafra before being recalled and sold.

Arsenal’s earlier withdrawal from the Diomande race could also have been influenced by the successful acquisition of Jakub Kiwior for €25m.

The young defender from Spezia provided Arsenal with immediate cover as well as potential for the future, allowing them to shift their focus to other signings.

Arsenal’s revived interest in Ousmane Diomande could signify an interesting development for both the player and the club, but it could also signify a club trying to cash in on a player they only recently purchased, using Arsenal’s name to drive up his price.
