Billy Vigar heads to Eastbourne Borough on loan

Billy Vigar, the 19-year-old forward from Arsenal, has taken the next step in his football career by signing on with Eastbourne Borough on a season-long loan.

This move for Vigar follows his signing of a professional contract with Arsenal in 2022 and a successful stint with Derby County U-21s last season.

Arsenal supporters have watched Vigar’s development with interest since he first joined the club in December 2017.

Despite some injury-related challenges, the young forward has made his mark in the U18 squad, showing promise and resilience that hint at his potential for future success.

Having signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2022, Vigar spent the second half of last season on loan with Derby County U-21s, where he made nine appearances in Premier League 2.

Vigar’s journey hasn’t always been smooth. He faced a significant period of inactivity due to injuries, making just six appearances from the start of the 2020/21 campaign until mid-November of the same season.

Even his return to action, a successful outing with a goal against West Ham in November, didn’t immediately see a return to form.

However, the striker persevered and his hard work paid off at the end of February. Vigar scored three goals and provided two assists in the final nine games of the U18 campaign.

This contribution was vital in a dramatic upturn in form for the Arsenal U18s.

Vigar’s influence was felt particularly in the team’s late revival. Although primarily a striker, Vigar’s versatility saw him frequently playing out wide, contributing to the team’s success from a variety of positions on the field.

Now, as part of his continued professional development, Vigar is moving to Eastbourne Borough for the upcoming season. The experience promises to be valuable, as it will allow the young forward more playing time and exposure in a competitive environment.

Arsenal’s supporters and management will undoubtedly keep a close eye on Vigar’s progress at Eastbourne Borough, eager to see how he can build upon his previous successes.

As for Vigar, the loan signifies another step in his professional journey, offering him the chance to further develop his skills and push his career forward.

Eastbourne Borough boss, Mark Beard said: “Billy is a player I have admired for a long time and we are lucky that we have been able to agree a deal with Arsenal to sign him.

“He is a quality centre forward who is very intelligent. Billy’s movement, passing and finishing are top class.

“Along with Steff (Vukoje), they are both great additional signings to the team, and have both settled in brilliantly this week in Wales.”

Even as Vigar embarks on this new chapter of his football journey, his future at Arsenal remains unclear.

Having fought through injury setbacks, demonstrated his versatility and provided key contributions in the U18s’ late season success, Vigar’s potential is clear but whether he has what’s needed to make it at Arsenal remains to be seen.

At this point, however, his loan to Eastbourne Borough is seen not as a final step towards a departure, but as an investment in his future.
