Fabio Vieira has withdrawn from the Portugal u21 squad set to feature in the European Championships later this month with an injury.
Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira joined up with the Portugal u21s last week, ahead of the European Championships, but he was carrying an injury upon arrival.
O Jogo report that Vieira was the last to arrive, and he was solely working in the gym.
After a few more days of that gym work, those in charge with the Portugal u21s evidently decided that Vieira wasn’t going to be able to get fit to feature in the tournament, which kicks off on June 21st.
As a result, Vieira has been replaced by Diego Moreira in the squad.
O Minho confirm that Vieira’s problem is an injury, despite some ambiguous reports labelling it a “medical condition”.
Vieira had been set to captain the u21 side, having played a key role in qualifying.
The Arsenal 23-year-old scored seven goals and assisted two in eight qualifiers between September 2021 and June 2022, so it’s a shame he’ll now miss out on the actual tournament.
Arsenal will still have a representative in the side, with Nuno Tavares also called up for u21 duty.
Emile Smith Rowe will also be involved at the event, playing for the England u21s.
