Reiss Nelson: A gamechanger for Arsenal
In the world of football, being a gamechanger is a high honour.
For Arsenal‘s Reiss Nelson, it’s a testament to his extraordinary performance this season when he got a chance on the pitch.
Standout performance against Bournemouth
The award, recognising the player with the single most match-transforming performance over the course of the season, comes on the back of a thrilling match against Bournemouth in March at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal found themselves 2-0 down until Ben White pulled one back. Then, in the 69th minute, Mikel Arteta brought Nelson into the fray.
Nelson’s key contributions to the comeback
After Nelson’s introduction, the game’s dynamic swiftly changed.
Nelson was instrumental in drawing Arsenal level, assisting a Thomas Partey goal.
However, it was in the 97th minute that his defining contribution arrived. A cleared corner found its way to Nelson who, from the edge of the area, controlled the ball and unleashed a bullet shot into the top corner.
This last-minute goal not only sealed Arsenal’s victory but also secured Nelson’s place as the gamechanger of the season.
Victorious amid stiff competition
The award didn’t come easy, with Nelson facing stiff competition from five other players, including Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min and Rodrigo Bentancur, and Manchester City teammates Erling Haaland and Riyad Mahrez.
Nevertheless, thanks to the votes from supporters and a panel of experts, it’s Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson who came out on top, cementing his status as the Premier League’s Gamechanger of the Season.
