Leno reflects on his Arsenal chapter
Bernd Leno, a crucial figure between the sticks for Arsenal for four years, has shed light on his departure from the Gunners.
Now in goal for Fulham, Leno candidly admits he doesn’t regret moving on from his Arsenal chapter.
While he still maintains a healthy relationship with his former teammates, he firmly believes it was time to turn the page.
“No, not at all,” Leno said when asked if he had regrets leaving Arsenal who almost won the Premier League.
“In the end, Arsenal didn’t become champions, but regardless of that, I had to look at myself: the Arsenal chapter was just over for me. I still have a good relationship with some guys.
“But I’m not crying after the Arsenal chapter, I haven’t missed or regretted anything.”
Finding his rhythm at Fulham
As a key component of Fulham’s side, Leno is positive about his performance and the club’s trajectory, expressing joy at the intense gameplay and the resilience of the team.
His also believes his nomination for the Premier League Goalkeeper of the Season further validates his personal progression at Fulham.
Premier League versus Bundesliga and Europa League
Leno, who has spent five years in the Premier League, also shared his thoughts on the competitiveness of the league.
In his eyes, the Premier League stands head and shoulders above the Bundesliga and the Europa League.
The intensity of games, including fourteen high-level clashes in the second half of the season with Fulham, outweighs a few highlights in the Europa League.
The case of Declan Rice
Discussing potential player movements, Leno touched on the situation of Premier League player Declan Rice.
He opines that while Bayern might be an interesting prospect for English players, it’s often the case that they prefer staying within the confines of their home league.
The allure of the home base, the world-renowned league, and a good salary make a compelling case against international transfers.
Thus, any serious attempt by Bayern to acquire Rice would have to be exceedingly persuasive and it appears that Bayern have already withdrawn from the chase.
Acknowledging Ilkay Gundogan’s brilliance
Beyond his own experiences, Leno also speaks highly of his fellow countryman Ilkay Gundogan, who is currently being linked with a move to Arsenal.
He feels that Gundogan’s performances are often overlooked in Germany, even though they are undeniably world-class.
“If Ilkay showed these performances in Germany, he would be voted footballer of the year every year,” Leno said.
“He may not be that much of a focus for the German fans and pundits here. What Ilkay delivers is simply world class. Nobody can tell me otherwise.
“He leads the team, makes important goals and assists – and has been for years! In my opinion, Ilkay should have a much better standing in Germany.”
