Earlier this week, various sources confirmed Arsenal had opened formal talks over the transfer of Declan Rice, with the Gunners seeing their first offer of £80m and £10m in add-ons knocked back.

At the time, the suggestion was that Arsenal would quickly return with an improved bid, and that bid is now imminent.

Sami Mokbel reports for the Daily Mail that Arsenal are making an improved bid worth £90m in guaranteed payments, and add-ons taking the total bid over £100m.

The fee isn’t the only factor for West Ham, however, with Mokbel explaining that the Hammers also want shorter payment terms than Arsenal had initially offered.

As it stands, the Mail suggest Manchester City’s interest in Rice isn’t as advanced as Arsenal’s, and the Gunners believe the player wants to join them.

Jacob Steinberg confirms for The Guardian that Arsenal are set to make a new Rice offer, and the expectation remains that he’ll join them over City.

Rice’s preference is the switch to north London, and personal terms won’t be an issue.

But another problematic factor is that West Ham feel Arsenal’s previous bid contained add-ons that are unrealistic.

They want £100m to sell Rice, and if they believe Arsenal won’t ever trigger the add-on payments, then they won’t get that amount.

The West Ham Way broke the news of Arsenal’s first bid, and they confirm that the belief is that the Gunners are preparing a second offer of £91m plus £10m in add-ons, to be submitted either today or tomorrow.

But as per other sources, The West Ham Way confirm that the payment schedule and the likelihood of add-ons being triggered remain obstacles to overcome before the two clubs can agree on a deal.

24-year-old Rice made 50 appearances for West Ham this season, scoring five goals and providing four assists from his defensive midfield role.

After helping West Ham to avoid relegation, he captained them to Europa Conference League success over Fiorentina.

Rice is also an England international, making 41 appearances for his country, and he’s currently in training with Gareth Southgate’s squad.
