In an emotionally charged Premier League match between Newcastle and Arsenal, the Magpies were denied a penalty after VAR intervened, leading to Newcastle legend Alan Shearer expressing his fury at former referee Dermot Gallagher on live television.

The incident occurred just seven minutes into the game when Bruno Guimaraes’ shot seemed to hit the arm of Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior. Referee Chris Kavanagh initially awarded a penalty, but upon reviewing the pitch-side monitor, he overturned his decision, determining the ball had struck Kiwior’s thigh before his hand.

Shearer, visibly frustrated, grilled Gallagher, who was convinced the ball had hit the top of Kiwior’s thigh.

Shearer questioned the former referee’s certainty, asking if he was “100 per cent certain” and why it took multiple replays to make the decision.

Gallagher, seemingly uncomfortable, stood by his view that the penalty should not have been given.

Shearer took to Twitter to express his discontent with the handball law, calling it a “complete mess.”

However, the reversal of the original penalty decision was clearly the right call and Shearer seemingly had less issue with the numerous flying Newcastle elbows. Perhaps because that was his own trademark when he played.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring for Arsenal just seven minutes after the penalty decision was overturned before Fabian Schar scored an own goal as punishment for the multiple poor challenges he’d been allowed to get away with all game.
