The Premier League have confirmed their refereeing appointments for the upcoming round of fixtures, with Chris Kavanagh set to referee Arsenal’s game against Newcastle United on Sunday.

The referee will be joined by assistants Richard West and Nick Greenhalgh, fourth official Anthony Taylor, VAR Andy Madley, and assistant VAR Scott Ledger for the 16:30 clash.

Kavanagh does have one controversial Arsenal red card on his resume, handing Eddie Nketiah a sending-off for a challenge against Leicester City back in 2020.

The referee didn’t initially award a red card, but he decided to do so after a VAR review, and Arsenal went on to concede a late equaliser with 10 men.

There was one other incident this season where the reverse happened, with Kavanagh sending Gabriel Magalhaes off against Leeds United before overturning the call and giving a yellow on VAR review.

Other than that, the Manchester-born referee has officiated more Arsenal wins than defeats in his career, nine wins, two draws, five defeats in all competitions.

The only other time Kavanagh took charge of an Arsenal-Newcastle match was in 2021, when the Gunners won 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium after extra time in the FA Cup third round.

Arsenal fans will hope the choice of referee doesn’t end up having a significant bearing on the game.
