Miguel Azeez has made an early return from his loan spell at Wigan Athletic, rejoining first-team training with Arsenal this week.

Arsenal midfielder Miguel Azeez has spent this season out on loan, first with UD Ibiza and then with Wigan Athletic. He was expected to remain with the Championship side until the end of the season.

But earlier this week, Azeez returned to Arsenal, joining up with Mikel Arteta’s squad for first-team training.

Wigan have a game against Rotherham United on Monday, but Azeez is evidently not in contention to feature in the match. This is no surprise, as the 20-year-old hasn’t made a Wigan squad since January.

The return follows reports of a heated confrontation between Wigan boss Shaun Maloney and Miguel Azeez’s father and brother at Wigan’s game against Reading last week.

Femi Azeez plays for Reading, and the draw in that game confirmed Wigan’s relegation to the Championship. Afterwards, the Reading man and his dad confronted Maloney out on the pitch.

“Miguel hasn’t really had an easy time there,” Azeez Sr had said previously. “He started with Kolo Toure and the new manager came in and hasn’t really trusted him, which has been disappointing.”

As a result of Miguel Azeez’s general non-involvement for Wigan, he ends the season with just 13 appearances between his two loan spells, after four appearances for the Arsenal u21s in August.

It will ultimately feel like another frustrating year, and it’s anyone’s guess what’s next for the midfielder. At least for the time being, he can work on his sharpness in training with Arsenal.
