Youri Tielemans will be a free agent this summer, with no plans to extend his contract with Leicester City and no agreement on where he’ll go next.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Youri Tielemans will undoubtedly leave Leicester City as a free agent this summer, on the expiry of his current contract.

Tielemans has multiple proposals on the table for his next move, but he hasn’t agreed terms with anyone yet, and doesn’t plan to do so until the end of the season.

As it stands, Leicester are in a dire situation, sitting in 19th with just two games of the season remaining, an away trip to Newcastle United and the visit of West Ham United.

Leicester are a point behind Leeds United, two points behind Everton, and four points behind Nottingham Forest. They need to overtake at least two of those three teams to stay up.

So given the increasing likelihood that Leicester are playing Championship football next season, it’s not hugely surprising Tielemans isn’t keen to extend his contract.

Arsenal were long linked with Tielemans, but even on a free transfer, it doesn’t seem quite so likely they’ll return for him this summer.

With the return to the Champions League, Arsenal are focusing their improved budget on top-quality midfield signings. The likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo appear to be on their shortlist, with physicality clearly a primary concern.

For everything he’s good at, Tielemans isn’t the same sort of midfielder as those two.

With Granit Xhaka’s future uncertain, perhaps Arsenal could be looking to fill out the squad with another cheaper midfielder in the rotation. For now, Tielemans is probably more likely to go elsewhere.
