Arsenal edge closer to Champions League qualification with victory over Leicester City, but multiple injuries cast a shadow over the win.

  • Arsenal defeated Leicester City 1-0, closing gap on top three and Champions League qualification
  • Injuries to key players, including Steph Catley and Stina Blackstenius, raise concerns for remaining fixtures
  • Tight race to decide the League winner and Champions League participants in the final weeks

Arsenal defeated Leicester City 1-0 thanks to a Frida Maanum wonder goal to close the gap on third-placed Chelsea and the final Champions League place, but it came at a big cost as the team sustained a couple more injuries.

Steph Catley, who was rested after her heroics on Monday against Wolfsburg, came on as a sub and unfortunately only lasted 16 minutes before going off injured.

Stina Blackstenius was also substituted, and there will also be question marks about her fitness.

Arsenal currently sit in fourth place, out of the Champions League qualification.

They have closed the gap to two points to Chelsea in third, three on Manchester City, and six points to the League leaders Manchester United.

They have four remaining games to finish the season.

Arsenal’s four remaining games

  • Brighton away Wednesday 10 May
  • Everton away Wednesday 17 May
  • Chelsea away Sunday 21 May
  • Villa at home Saturday 27 May

Twelve points would secure Champions League for sure, but beating Chelsea will need a huge effort, matching the one seen at the Continental Cup final.

The big question is who will be available for those remaining four games with all the injuries affecting the team right now.

Out until the end of the season: Miedema, Mead, Williamson, Wienroither, Little.

Questionable for the upcoming games: Foord, Hurtig, Catley.

Having eight first-team players out is a huge problem, it means we could have only 16 senior players available, three of them being goalkeepers.

Among the youngsters, we have 18-year-old Teyah Goldie, who has a professional contract but has just come back from an ACL and has not had a first-team minute yet.

Then we have a few Academy u-21 players who have been involved so far this season: Agyemang, Williams, Harbert, Earl, and Reid.

Unfortunately, a few of them will not be available soon as the UEFA u-17 Euros start next Sunday in Estonia and with the squad finalised on the 11 May. Reid, Harbert, and Agyemang are likely to be called up for the tournament that takes place from the 14 to 26 May.

Here are the remaining games for the four teams competing for the three Champions League places:

  • 07 May Man Utd v Tottenham Liverpool v Man City Chelsea v Everton
  • 10 May Chelsea v Leicester Brighton v Arsenal
  • 17 May Everton v Arsenal West Ham v Chelsea
  • 21 May Man Utd v Man City Chelsea v Arsenal
  • 27 May Reading v Chelsea Man City v Everton Arsenal v Aston Villa Liverpool v Manchester United

The expectation is the top four teams will not drop any points in the remaining games because the race is so tight and therefore Sunday the 21st of May might decide who wins the League and who ends up not going to the Champions League.

I believe Arsenal will end up in third place, overtaking City, and Chelsea will end up winning the League again, but anything can happen in the upcoming weeks…even Arsenal winning the League if the other three teams collapse.
