Arsene Wenger is still backing Arsenal to win the Premier League title this season, but he admits he’s not completely objective.

With seven games remaining of Arsenal’s Premier League campaign, the Gunners are top of the league and four points clear of Manchester City.

The title is very much in the balance, however, with City having a game in hand and hosting Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium next week.

Both sides know that if they win all their games, they win the league. But with City arguably having the easier fixtures and the experience in this kind of situation, they’re currently the favourites for many despite Arsenal’s points advantage.

Yet Arsene Wenger still believes his former club can win the title, insisting the Gunners will be glad to have this opportunity.

“What you want in this position is to have things in your hands,” Wenger said. “If Arsenal win their games, they will win the league, so that’s the ideal position when you have eight games to go (for City), for Arsenal seven games to go.

“Of course, City have an opportunity to play Arsenal at home, and that can be the decider of the championship.

“I still fancy Arsenal. I’m not completely objective in this situation!

As a potential positive for Arsenal in the remainder of the campaign, Wenger pointed to City’s ongoing Champions League participation.

City are 3-0 up against Bayern Munich in their quarter-final tie, but Wednesday night’s second leg is in Munich, and it could still be a tense evening.

“We have to see as well how much the Champions League will take out of City,” Wenger added.

“If City [on Wednesday night] after 10 minutes or 20 minutes they are 2-0 up, because Bayern give up, they can prepare the next game.

“If City have to fight and play extra time and play on Saturday again… it will be different.”

Even assuming Pep Guardiola’s side progress to the next round, that just sets up two more Champions League matches in May, among the seven league games City have to play between April 30th and May 28th.

There will be plenty of potential banana skins, so Arsenal have to keep believing they can come out on top.
