If AC Monza were hoping to prove last week’s win over Inter Milan wasn’t a fluke, they got off to the worst possible start as they fell 2-0 down to Fiorentina within 15 minutes.

Yet Monza have faced plenty of adversity this season, and they always seem to bounce back. Within 26 minutes it was 2-1, thanks to an own goal, then Dany Mota made it 2-2 before the break.

Matteo Pessina’s second-half penalty ended up securing another unlikely three points for Monza in a 3-2 win, leaving them 12th in the Serie A table.

Pablo Mari’s loan side are now 15 points clear of the relegation zone with just seven games remaining. To fall into the relegation zone, they would need six of the teams below them to overtake.

At this stage, for Monza to get relegated would take an almost impossible set of circumstances.

For the team in 18th place to pick up 15+ points in seven games to catch Monza would be incredible on its own. Not to mention that Monza would have to lose all seven of theirs.

But then when you factor in that the team in 17th would have to pick up 14+ points as well, and the team in 16th would need 13+ points, and so on, as well as the fact that some of them play each other during that period, the odds become astronomical.

In reality, it’s all but confirmed now.

Monza have an obligation to buy Mari under certain conditions, one of which is that they remain in Serie A.

With that outcome now appearing so likely, the 29-year-old’s move is starting to look like a formality.
