Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has embarrassed his own club’s supporters with new quotes comparing their side to Arsenal.

At the time of writing, Arsenal sit 21 points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, with the Gunners’ north London rivals eliminated from all other competitions and struggling to make it into the top four.

It’s been a terrible season for Spurs, and it could yet get worse. Champions League qualification looks increasingly unlikely, and they now have Aston Villa, Brighton, and Liverpool bearing down on them.

One defeat would allow all three of the teams below them to catch up with wins, and Spurs’ next three games are against Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Liverpool.

Assessing the situation, club chairman Daniel Levy suggested the problem was that Spurs are behind Arsenal, before defending his club by pointing out they were ahead of the Gunners in recent league seasons.

“Despite the fact I feel sick that there’s a club in north London that’s a bit higher than us at the time, if I look back in the last five years we’ve been higher than them,” Levy said. “We’ve had some fantastic times.”

Any self-respecting Spurs fan should find these quotes embarrassing.

For a start, simply finishing above a rival should not qualify as a fantastic time. The last five years of Spurs league finishes have brought zero trophies and zero title challenges.

Even during this rare period of Spurs getting the better of Arsenal in the league, the Gunners have still won more trophies and mounted the first serious title challenge from north London across those last five years.

Arsenal are also further ahead of Spurs than it ever was the other way around.

In the last three seasons, Spurs have finished three, one, and two points ahead of Arsenal. As mentioned, the current gap is 21 points.

Then there’s the fact that the Spurs team have been in their prime for the last few seasons, and their aging team now sits a long way behind a very youthful Arsenal side.

You’d hope the best is still ahead for the likes of Saka, Martinelli, Saliba, Ramsdale, White, Odegaard, Gabriel, and others.

More than all that, it must be frustrating to hear your chairman suggesting that your season is a success or failure based on what one of your rivals does.

Spurs are in real trouble right now, and that would be true even if Arsenal were 10th.

Thankfully, none of this is our problem. Onto Southampton, where three points would secure Champions League football and keep the title race alive.
