Arsenal defender and England captain Leah Williamson has been named the most influential woman in sport, topping BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour Power List this week.

This recognition highlights her impact on and off the field, as well as her advocacy for equal access to sport in schools.

Leah Williamson tops Woman’s Hour Power List

The Woman’s Hour Power List, launched in 2013, celebrates the achievements of British women across various fields.

This year, the focus was on women in sports, with listeners suggesting candidates across several categories.

A judging panel including Paralympic and Olympic gold medalists Tanni Grey-Thompson and Sam Quek chose the top 30, with Williamson leading the list.

Captaining Lionesses to Euro 2022 glory

Williamson’s influence in sport was evident when she captained the England national team, the Lionesses, to Euro 2022 glory.

Their triumphant campaign concluded with a 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley Stadium, secured by an extra-time strike from Chloe Kelly.

Advocating for equal access to sport in schools

Aside from her success on the pitch, Williamson, along with her Arsenal and England teammate Lotte Wubben-Moy, has been instrumental in urging the UK government to provide equal access to sport in schools for girls.

In an interview with the BBC, she stated, “I always say if a girl chooses not to play football, then it’s good because she’s had a choice in the first place – I’ll take that any day instead of somebody choosing for her.”

Celebrating women’s achievements in sports

Karen Dalziel, editor of BBC Woman’s Hour, expressed her pride in honouring exceptional women: “The Women in Sport Power List recognizes 30 incredible women whose passion, dedication, and expertise are transforming the profile and experience of women’s sport.

“We are proud to celebrate the unique qualities and achievements of each of these amazing women as they inspire others and bring about lasting change.”

Lotte Wubben-Moy’s recognition for advocacy

In addition to Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy was also recognised for her efforts in leading the campaign for equal access to sports and striving to secure a legacy for women’s football.

Both Arsenal players have demonstrated their commitment to promoting gender equality in sports and inspiring future generations of female athletes.

Finalissima against Brazil awaits

Williamson will captain the Lionesses in the upcoming Finalissima against Brazil at Wembley next Thursday.

As the most influential woman in sport, she continues to make a significant impact on the field and as an advocate for women’s sports.
